REFLECTIONS FOR THE MONTH:

Changes at The Mission

During our 2009 Christmas Service Lis Warwood announced her retirement after 11 years as Leader of the Mission. Although the Committee wished Lis to stay on she indicated that it was time for her to move on to free her time for her own projects. We are pleased to say that Lis will continue to be active in the Mission remaining a Trustee and a Committee member. The Mission Committee extends their heartfelt thanks to Lis on behalf of all members and attendees, for the amazing work she has done to take the Mission forward through changing and challenging times. Those who worked with her on the Committee are aware of how committed Lis was to operating in a way that ensured that all its members were fully involved in all of the decisions taken.

A list of her achievements is too long for this space but I must draw attention to a few of them. The Friday Healing Clinic, which so many have benefitted from, was started by Lis before she became leader and nurtured by her through early years of its operation at times working alone with few healers available. Lis also oversaw the visiting mediums program which saw such wonderful mediums as Rev Anne Gehman come to the Mission. On a practical basis at a time when insurers were withdrawing from public liability insurance Lis managed, at the last moment, to find alternative cover after a very demanding search to prevent the Mission having to temporarily close. Indeed few people would be aware of the effort given voluntarily behind the scenes by Lis to ensure that the New Age Spiritualist Mission operated smoothly and the huge amount of tasks undertaken quietly without fuss.

At the same time Robert Johns announced his intention to retire from the Committee in the near future. To facilitate this he retired as the Deputy Leader and as Secretary. Like Lis Robert’s achievements are too many to list on this page. Dedication is just one of them, 50 + years as a Trustee and committee member. In many ways Robert’s permanent presence and wonderful personality has made him the essential soul of the Mission, as solid a representation of this organisation as the building he designed for us to meet in. Fortunately we are not losing Roberts skills as he is remaining a Trustee and continuing as the Treasurer of the Building Fund. Once again the Mission Committee offers their heartfelt thanks

As Leader and Deputy leader Lis and Robert offered successive committees great leadership and support. They will be a hard act to follow and I am sure that all members and attendees will wish the best to those who are attempting to step up to these roles. I was elected by the Committee as the new leader in January. Pam Reeves is now our new Deputy Leader and has volunteered to take over the treasurer role one which I have undertaken for the last 7 years. Finally Laurence Nobes has become the new Mission Secretary. I thank them for agreeing to fill these critical roles and I also thank the Committee for their calm support to all of us at this time of change. As the new leader I am aware of the example left by all of those wonderful people who have preceded me and led the Mission forward to where it is today. I can only ask for the help of the Members, Committee and Spirit to ensure that the Mission continues its progress.
